Norbert "Nobby" Peter Stiles MBE, born on 18th May 1942, in Collyhurst, Manchester, England, UK was a professional footballer and manager, who played as a defensive midfielder. Nobby played for his country for 5 years, winning 28 caps and scoring one goal, having played every minute of England's victorious FIFA World Cup campaign of 1966. His best game was probably the semi-final of the tournament against Portugal, when Stiles marked Eusébio, his tough performance nullifying the legendary goal scorer for almost the entire game. Nobby also played well in the final, which England won 4-2 against West Germany then danced on the Wembley pitch during his post-match celebration, holding the World Cup trophy in one hand and his false teeth in the other. Stiles spent most of his club career for Manchester United, playing for 11 years at Old Trafford, where he became renowned for his tough tackling and ball-winning abilities. Nobby was a holding midfielder, having been described as a 'destroyer', a player whose main job is running, winning back possession then distributing the ball to other players. He won two League titles and a European Cup with the Red Devils, being one of only 3 Englishmen, along with Bobby Charlton and Ian Callaghan, to have won both the World Cup and European Cup. Stiles also played for short spells with Middlesbrough and Preston North End.
