Maya And Her Friends - A story about tolerance and acceptance from Ukrainian author Larysa Denysenko
"Maya And Her Friends" is written by Larysa Denysenko, a Ukrainian writer and human rights activist. She has written a beautiful story about tolerance, acceptance and the life of ordinary Ukrainian children living in a country threatened by war.

"Maya And Her Friends" by Larysa Denysenko follows nine-year-old Maja from Ukraine and her 16 classmates, who all comes from different backgrounds and home situations. Sofia misses her father, who has disappeared during the battles with the Russian soldiers. Aksana doesn't have a mom and lives alone with her father. Hristina lives full-time with her grandmother because her parents work abroad. Rais is new in class, he is a Crimean Tatar and had to flee from Crimea with his family due to the occupation. Timko has divorced parents and lives with both in turns. Petro is a Roma with a large, loving family clan. Maja herself has a lot of friends and two great mothers who love her.

Denysenko originally wrote the book in 2017 when Russia had conquered Crimea and a war between Russia and Ukraine was a looming threat rather than a fact. The story of Maya and her friends is being reissued in 2022 after the Russian invasion, and the publisher will donate all profits to Unicef and the organisation's effort to help and support the children of Ukraine.
